ABOUT SLOW STITCHING
At the core of the work presented in this portfolio is the meditative activity of hand-stitching s l o w l y, mindfully, breathing in and out until our surroundings fade and only the stitching remains.
The process for this piece began as most of my embroidered work does, with a blank piece of fabric mounted on a hoop, with a dash of serendipity for good measure.
As things progressed, it was easy to ascertain I was channeling two women I admire immensely: My daughter and Lucienne Day. Each stitch brought serenity and contentment until the very end.
Note on the side: I've always gravitated towards Lucienne Day's distinctive style. Her compositions, palettes and shapes are incredibly alluring, particularly those in Calyx, Perpetua and Lapis, all mid-century designs for Heal's and British Celanese.
