Hand-stitched meditations
Since 2015, embroidery has helped me navigate those pesky, fraying moments life tends to throw our way. The hand-stitched work generated these past few years explores themes of the here and now, self-expression, the everyday and its leftovers, introspection, quietude and finding contentment. During the pandemic, not surprisingly, embroidery became my activity of choice to help boost morale by hand-stitching a little bit every day, managing to find serenity, focus and hope.
Ánimos remendados - mended disposition is the result of that prolific time. What makes this piece more special is that I was stitching alongside my friend Marce, who lives in Argentina. Both of us would meet up once a week via video chat to check in, talk about the work's progress and carry on.
Nowadays, in a post-pandemic era, I continue to find hand-stitching a meditative activity, one that through its slow nature keeps me grounded and centred while breathing in and out, one stitch at a time.
In the end, it all has really been about practising mindfulness with nothing more than fabric, needle and thread.
